Spam Email!
There are always virulent spam and virus emails doing the rounds, so you need to be vigilant using the methods below to reduce it. 

 

Generally spammers target a domain using automated software to target 'common' email addresses.
Example: spammer locates active web address : www.youraddress.com Spam program then sends mail to: email@ bob@ support@ sales@ webmaster@...Some spammers are known to try up 1000 possible addresses.

 

Can you do anything to stop spam?

There is little one can do to legitimately stop spam. The best defence is good anti-virus software coupled with good mail set-up and practices. 

• Common spam can be automatically deleted using Message Rules.
• Use SpamAssassin (hosting cPanel)
• Avoid using 'catch-all' accounts.

Mailbox FULL!

Always download and delete email off the mail-server regularly.  If the mailbox becomes full, then it cannot receive any more mail.  If a mailbox has not been checked/accessed for 6 weeks it will be deemed abandoned and the contents will be cleared.

 

AntiVirus Software

WebMail ALERTcPanel has withdrawn support for several webmail software packages due to security concerns. Users may find corrupted folders and email if they continue to use SquirrelMail.We use Horde.

 

Catch-All Email AccountsWe strongly advise not setting up this type of email administration.

 

Set-up (recommendation)

• Default Address: :fail: (this returns all mail addressed to non-accounts and disables the Main (default) account.)
• Only mail addressed to a 'named' email account in Manage/Add/Remove Accounts is accepted.
• To reduce the number of named accounts, set-up Forwarders that receive mail to one address and redirect it to another (named) account.
• Turn-on (Enable) SpamAssassin which is effectively a Virus/Spam software but on the server.
• SpamAssassin can even add a message to the subject line of Virus/Spam emails. Go to SpamAssassin/Configure/rewrite_header subject
• Suggested: SPAM - (The subject line will then look like: SPAM - Original subject line)
